EXPERIENCE
Since our inception, conservation has been at the core of our mission. We’ve successfully reforested over 80 hectares of former pastures, restoring them to vibrant cloud forest. Today, El Séptimo spans 255 hectares of lush cloud forest, with plans to reforest an additional 6 hectares.
Our commitment also extends to empowering the local community through meaningful partnerships and job creation. By collaborating closely with local stakeholders, we foster opportunities that benefit residents and contribute to the region's growth and development.
Below are some of our key projects and programs:
-
Rainforest AllianceIn 2004, we formed a partnership with RA through their Good Management Practices Program, a pivotal step in enhancing our operational excellence. Their expert guidance has been crucial in cataloging our processes and developing detailed checklists, streamlining our operations and establishing a strong foundation for continuous improvement.
Their support helped us organize our procedures and adopt best practices, significantly boosting our efficiency and effectiveness. By consistently applying these guidelines, we refine our practices to not only meet but exceed industry standards. -
ASECAsociacisn Ecuatoriana de Ecoturismo - ASEC
From 2004 to 2006, we partnered with ASEC for a comprehensive audit of our adherence to the Rainforest Alliance’s Good Management Practices. Their thorough evaluation assessed various aspects of our operations, including environmental impact, sustainability efforts, and community engagement. We were proud to receive an outstanding score of 91.53%, reflecting our dedication to high standards in eco-tourism and sustainable practices. -
Bird BandingIn 2008, we launched the Bird Banding Project at El Séptimo Paraíso. With the expertise of Mark Blazis, we welcomed a team of experienced bird-banding volunteers from Massachusetts, who spent a week at our reserve assisting with the banding and cataloging of local bird species. We also offered this opportunity to four local birding guides and one trainee, enhancing their knowledge and skills. This project marked the beginning of our commitment to avian research and conservation, and we look forward to welcoming additional qualified banders to expand and continue this important initiative.

Reforestation ProgramGiant Daisies are initially planted in pasture areas to accelerate land restoration. These hardy plants grow quickly, providing ample shade that suppresses unwanted grasses and prevents the return of old pasture vegetation. Their rapid growth prepares the soil for the next phase of regeneration. After about three years, the land—now free of invasive species and enriched by the natural processes of the Giant Daisies—is ready for replanting with local endemic species. This approach fosters a more resilient and sustainable ecosystem, paving the way for a thriving, biodiverse environment.

Less Packaging ProgramOur logistics department oversees all food procurement with a strong focus on sustainability. We've implemented a comprehensive program to reduce plastic and packaging waste. Recycled boxes are used for transporting food to the lodge, minimizing the use of plastic bags. Upon arrival, these boxes are sent to a recycling plant, and the plastic bags are repurposed for use within the lodge and its workshops. This eco-friendly approach extends to all supplies for the lodge and offices, ensuring that our commitment to waste reduction is applied throughout our operations.
-
Promotion of Recycled MaterialsWe have implemented a comprehensive sustainability program focused on reducing waste and promoting recycling. All office and toilet paper used is made from recycled materials. To minimize single-use plastic, we encourage the reuse of plastic containers and provide guests with glass or reusable water bottles. These small changes play a significant role in supporting our broader commitment to environmental responsibility.
Recycling bins are strategically placed throughout the lodge to promote responsible waste management. All paper waste is collected and sent to our recycling facility, including materials gathered from our Quito office. This holistic approach reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and helps reduce our overall ecological footprint. -
Office Internship ProgramEach year, El Séptimo offers an internship opportunity for one student to gain hands-on experience in tourism and conservation. The intern works closely with senior staff, assisting in logistics, project development, and accounting. This role provides practical insights into sustainable tourism operations while contributing to real conservation efforts.
