You can rent a car at any of the local rental agencies, providing you are over 18 years old and have a valid driver's license. You can use your country's driver's license or an international driver's license for six months. If you plan on staying longer, you will need to apply for an Ecuadorian license.
Driving in Ecuador is not a difficult task. Roads are generally in good condition and the cities as well as the countryside are safe to travel. However, road signs are scarce and you must make sure that you have a recent map for accurate directions, since street names and roads often change.
