Congress
The legislative power in Ecuador is vested in the unicameral National Congress. The Congress is made up of 121 legislators, of whom 79 are elected nationally by popular vote and 42 are elected to represent each province. All members of Congress serve a four year term and can be re-elected. Congress has the constitutional responsibility to draft and pass legislation and to ratify laws and treaties. It is also empowered to choose judges for the Supreme and divisional courts.
In modern times, members of Congress have become "watchdogs" of the executive office, often questioning the President's nominations for cabinet members, and calling upon Ministers and other appointees to explain policies carried out by their cabinets.
The general public has become increasingly critical of Congressional members, as some have been involved in corruption scandals and have been removed from office.
