Current energy sector authorities are keen on developing alternative sources of energy production, especially in areas where the grid system is not available. Due to Ecuador's geographical location, solar energy projects have been very successful and are multiplying, especially in remote regions of the Amazon rainforest and the Galapagos Islands.

Studies of Ecuador's wind energy potential reveled that the most appropriate place to establish energy generation projects are along the coastal region, the Galapagos Islands, and the plains along the Andes Mountains. The country's geothermal resources are also considered important. It was concluded that there is a potential to generate over 500 MW of power in the gas reserves of the Gulf of Guayaquil.
